Every 2017 Toyota is equipped with one of two Toyota Safety Sense packages; Toyota Safety Sense C for compact vehicles or Toyota Safety Sense P for midsized and large vehicles. The standard safety sense was created to help protect drivers, passengers and pedestrians from the unpredictable.

Toyota Safety Sense C for compact Toyota vehicles, features three proprietary active safety technologies:

• Pre-Collision System
• Lane Departure Alert
• Automatic High Beams

The Toyota Safety Sense P for midsize and large vehicles is slightly different than Safety Sense for compact vehicles by featuring:

• Dynamic Radar Cruise
• Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
• Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist function
• Automatic High Beams

Pre-Collision System

For compact cars the Pre-Collision system uses a forward facing lase radar and camera to constantly scan the road ahead. If there is a possibility of a collision you will be notified by an audible and visual notification. There is a set amount of time to react before the vehicle will apply the brakes in the likely event of a collision to avoid or reduce impact.

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection uses the same combination of a radar with a camera but has the ability to recognize specific shapes. You will receive and audible warning with a display notification to alert you to a possible collision with a pedestrian. If you don't react in the set amount of time and the vehicle determines there is a high risk of collision the automatic braking will be applied to avoid or minimize a crash.

Lane Departure Alert

The Lane Departure Alert is there to help keep you in the center of your lane and avoid drifting over the line. By using a specialized camera that is designed to detect visible painted lane markers on the road and alerts you with a visual indicator light on the instrument panel and an audible beeping so you can take corrective action. The Lane Departure Alert for midsize and large vehicles is equipped with Steering Assist to help you stay in your lane. If the Lane Departure system determines that you are not taking corrective steering action Steering Assist will initiate gentle corrective steering when necessary.

Automatic High Beams

Seeing what is ahead at nighttime is important and sometimes not always easy. The Automatic High Beam safety system was designed to help you see more at night without blinding other drivers. When enabled the Automatic High Beams utilizes a special camera to detect headlights of oncoming vehicles and the taillights of vehicles you are approaching. When vehicles are detected ahead of you the head lights with automatically switch from high beams to low beams for enhanced forward visibility.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

Cruise Control is a helpful feature than many drivers utilize when on the highway. The Dynamic Radar Cruise Control works like normal cruise control but using forward-facing radar and camera maintain a safe distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you by adjusting your speed.  If the traffic slows Dynamic Radar Cruise Control will reduce your speed and when the traffic picks back up you will return to your pre-set speed.
