History

Hutchinson was founded in 1871 as a settlement at a railroad crossing over the Arkansas River. The town grew slowly, with the local salt beds becoming a major industry in the area and prompting the city's nickname of "Salt City." Over time, the area also became known for its wheat farming and having some of the richest oil fields in the Midwest. These industries continue to this day.

Today, Hutchinson is home to more than 42,000 residents and boasts a number of modern attractions. From hosting the NJCAA Men's Basketball Championship to being home to an internationally acclaimed space museum, the town's diversity makes for a vibrant scene to explore your interests.

·         Kansas State Fair: Every year, the Kansas State Fair takes place in Hutchinson for 10 days, beginning on the Friday after Labor Day.

·         Indian Creek Bison Ranch: For a glimpse into what life was like on the American Prairie, head to the Indian Creek Bison Ranch. While there, you can marvel at a herd of almost fifty bison and learn about the species' history in the region.
