History

Wichita, Kansas, is the largest city in the state, home to about 390,000 residents. Wichita began as a trading post in the 1860s right on the Chisholm Trail. It officially became a city in 1870.

Wichita experienced a business boom in the 1920s and 1930s when manufacturing companies and aeronautical engineers began to move into the area. For a time, so many aircrafts were being produced in the area that it became known as "The Air Capital of the World."

Wichita's flying tradition continues today, carried on by McConnell Air Force Base and Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, the largest airport in Kansas.
